Bonding and Other Common Treatments From a Cosmetic Dentist

Cosmetic Dentist Evans, GA

If you need to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile, a visit to the cosmetic dentist is necessary. Although cosmetic dentistry treatments are usually elective rather than necessary, some procedures also serve restoration purposes, such as dental bonding. The most common cosmetic treatments, including teeth whitening, are simple and can be completed in one dental appointment, while some demand specialized care.

Common treatments from a cosmetic dentist

When patients visit the cosmetic dentist, they can choose one or more of the following treatments to improve their smile.

Inlays and onlays

These are sometimes called indirect fillings and are used when a tooth has suffered mild to moderate decay or damage and a filling is not enough to support the existing tooth structure. If there is no damage to the tooth cusps, the inlay is applied directly over the tooth’s chewing surface. When the cusp is affected by the damage, however, the dentist will use an onlay instead.

Inlays and onlays are created in a dental laboratory from porcelain or composite resin material and bonded to the teeth with adhesive dental cement. They provide adequate support to restore the tooth's shape and strength and prevent further damages to the teeth.

Dental bonding

Dental bonding involves the restoration of damaged, discolored or decayed teeth with a composite material that matches the color of the tooth enamel. The dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth, apply the composite material and shape it into the desired form before hardening it with a high-intensity light. Simply called bonding, the procedure is effective for covering the damage to the tooth and restoring the healthy appearance of the tooth. Bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic treatments for patients with chipped, decayed, worn-down or cracked teeth.

Dental veneers

Usually produced from medical-grade ceramic, dental veneers are thin tooth-shaped shells custom-made to look natural and cosmetically appealing. They have a remarkably realistic appearance and are effective for solving many cosmetic dental issues, ranging from damaged enamel and crooked teeth to visible gaps between teeth. The dentist bonds the veneer over the front side of the tooth with a dental adhesive after tooth preparation. Veneers hide all the imperfections on the teeth.

Teeth whitening

This is one of the most basic cosmetic dental procedures. Years of eating and drinking, using medications and indulging in habits like smoking cause teeth staining. Also called teeth bleaching, whitening can be completed in the dentist’s office. The procedure will be done after dental cleaning to remove plaque, tartar and other debris from the surface of the tooth to restore the natural appearance of the teeth. Bleaching can also make the teeth lighter than its original color (up to eight shades lighter) and can be completed in a single dental appointment.

In conclusion

If you are not pleased with the appearance of your smile, it is necessary to seek a cosmetic dentist for treatment. They will perform the necessary evaluation and recommend the best treatments to restore your smile’s aesthetic appeal.
