Can a Broken Tooth be Saved?
Suspecting that you might have a broken tooth can be a bit scary. Our teeth affect our smiles, which can have a significant impact on our self-esteem. Thankfully, most of the time, a cracked tooth can be saved. It is vital that you contact your dentist immediately if you think your tooth might be broken, as early detection and quick treatment are very important.
Signs and symptoms of a cracked tooth
Teeth can break for various reasons, including sporting and automobile accidents, eating hard substances, teeth grinding, and even from wear and tear.
If you have recently experienced any of the following signs or symptoms, you may have a broken tooth: Swollen and tender gums, pain when chewing or biting, intermittent pain, sensitivities to sugary foods, and hot and cold foods and drinks.
It is important to note that sometimes there is no pain associated with a cracked tooth. If the crack is still minor, you may not have any signs or symptoms yet. For this reason, it is important to visit your dentist regularly. He or she may be able to see a break before it gets worse.
How can a broken tooth be repaired?
Thankfully, there are several options when it comes to repairing a broken or cracked tooth. Your dentist will be able to diagnose the problem and tell you about your options.
Dentists often use these treatments and procedures to save a cracked tooth:
- If only a small piece of enamel has broken off, sometimes a filling can repair the tooth.
- Dentists also use teeth bonding, a procedure in which composite resin is bonded over the cracked portion of the tooth.
- A crown, a prosthetic device usually made of ceramic or porcelain, can also be fitted over your entire tooth to correct the break.
- If the crack has extended into the pulp of the tooth, your dentist may recommend a root canal, which is a more extensive procedure.
Unfortunately, there are circumstances in which dentists cannot save the affected tooth. If there is extensive damage to the nerves and roots, extracting the tooth may be recommended. Two to three months after extraction, you may be a candidate for a dental implant, which replaces the tooth's root. After the implant is finished, a connector is placed, and the artificial tooth is attached. Many people find that a dental implant is a wonderful solution and are pleased when their smile is fully restored.
Our teeth contain the strongest substance in the human body: Enamel. While our teeth are incredibly durable, they are not unbreakable. Because early detection is important, be sure to visit your dentist regularly and watch for changes in your teeth. If you do find yourself with a broken or cracked tooth, don't worry. Most of the time, they can be repaired. Your dentist is eager to take care of you and will have you smiling again in no time.
